Finding Your Identity In God: Ideas For Knowing Our Identity In Christ

Identity crises are situations in which we come to feel that we do not know who we are, and in which we repeatedly ask ourselves questions about the meaning of our existence.

In an increasingly changing world, in which the expectations of what should be our identity are becoming more and more demanding, as believers, we are not exempt from going through these kinds of moments.

Today, I would like to share a fragment of the Bible in which I think God makes some claims about us and that shape our identity.

From this text, I will share with you some reflections on how to face an identity crisis with God.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his good purpose and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.

With all wisdom and understanding,

In him we were also made heirs, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in acordanse with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:3 -8; 11 – 12

In essence, what I would like to share with you is that our identity is not defined by what we think of ourselves, or what others think about us.

I once wrote an entry titled “How to Find a Purpose of Life in God”, where I wrote in greater detail about our identity.

Our identity is deeply rooted in God, and that is where we must seek it.

It is God who gives us an identity.

My identity is not what society says about me or what I think of me, it’s what God says about me.

Today’s text allows us to see several things God thinks about us as people who have given their lives and hearts to Jesus.

Let me expand a little about each one of them:

God says we are blessed

God has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings in Jesus.

That which was not ours because we had given it up due to sin, is now ours because of Him.

In your own life, in your identity crisis, when difficult things come, when your ideas of yourself tell you otherwise, remember that God says of you that you are blessed.

That means you can expect the good for your life and not the bad.

No contrary thinking or identity crisis can change that truth.

God says of us that we are chosen

Even though we may feel rejected by other people, or we do not accept ourselves, God chose you and me before the world existed to be His.

Throughout the Bible, it is evident that we are precious to Him.

God says we are holy and blameless before Him

When as we go through an identity crisis we think we have many flaws, or that we are not good enough, God reminds us that in Jesus we have already been made perfect in front of his presence.

What determines that your identity is not based on your performance, but based on the grace of God reflected in you through Jesus.

God says we are loved

When we think we have to win the love of God or others in order to deserve it, God reminds us that in Jesus we are loved infinitely and unconditionally.

That nothing and no one can change him, that his love was such that He gave his life for us.

To give us salvation and hope.

God says we are his children

Even when our concept of identity has been affected by a bad relationship with our earthly parents, we can rest in the peace of mind that we have a father who is good, who loves us, and who wants the best for us.

That we are children of God through Jesus, and that we can be counseled, accompanied, we can ask and receive, that we can be heard and cared for at the eternal throne.

That we are not alone.

God says we have a purpose

God reminds us that even though being in the midst of our identity crisis we may think that we have no purpose to live, we are not an accident, instead, we are part of his eternal purposes and we ourselves have a purpose that goes beyond this earth.

An eternal purpose.

We exist to be happy forever in God’s presence.

God says we are redeemed

When our identity crisis makes us feel that all is lost for us, God reminds us that He bought us with his blood and that we are no longer slaves to sin, but his.

That we should not be afraid of the future.

That in his hands we are forever safe.

God says we are forgiven

When our identity crisis tells us that we are guilty of our many mistakes, God declares to us that in Jesus we can be forgiven.

Regardless of our mistakes and regardless of our past, we can rest in the hope that God wants to give us a better present and a better future.

God says we are his heirs

When we feel that the future holds uncertainties and shortcomings, God says He has an eternal inheritance for us that is better than anything this world can offer us.

In Jesus, we are rich and have more than we need in abundance.

God says we are planned, and He has plans for us

When our identity crisis makes us feel that we have no plans or dreams, that our life is an absurdity, a cosmic accident, God reminds us that we are part of his plan.

That He thought of us before we existed and that in him we can dream again and have plans, projects, and purposes.

Conclusion

To face an identity crisis with God, we need to ask God to remind us all the good He thinks of us.

We need to help ourselves remember that because at the end that is the only real thing.

Our only certainty.

I hope these words have been a blessing to your life.
