God And Addiction: Principles For Overcoming Addiction With God

First of all, I want you to know that I’m glad you came to this webpage.

Getting out of an addiction is not easy.

But there is no addiction more powerful than God.

Please remember that God also works through qualified professionals, and that your case of addiction needs in addition to spiritual support also specialized professional support.

In the following lines, I would like to share with you some reflections on how to get out of addition with God.

There have been so many times when we have heard things like, “you must seek God, and he will give the strength to solve that problem, to get out of that addiction”.

But how to put into practice that beautiful advice?

Ponder with me these words found in the Bible:

(…) there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.

And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

| Romans‬ ‭8:1, 5-6, 9-11‬

The apostle Paul lived through struggles similar to ours and found his own answers in his Christian experience through the work of the Holy Spirit in his life.

It is almost shocking to read in Romans seven the struggle he lived between good and evil in his own body.

A struggle that you may be well familiar with because of the addiction you may be having, whether it’s you, a friend or family member.

And although in that chapter he seems to surrender, in chapter eight he gives the key to overcoming sin.

The idea I’m going to introduce to you is that important step that will take you from being an addict to being a person in the process of rehabilitation.

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

Dear reader, the most important step you need to take to get out of your addiction is to give place in your life to the Holy Spirit.

We need the spirit of God in our lives to defeat sin, to be able to live in holiness, and to fulfill the Lord’s commandments.

To overcome your addiction, you cannot continue to fight your flesh alone, you need to take care of the things of the spirit as a priority.

Even as we have to subject our flesh to discipline as the apostle did, our priority must be to allow and ask for ever greater manifestations of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

If you, my friend, are simply trying to resist your impulses on your own, without encouraging and allowing the work of the Holy Spirit, you may be wasting your time.

Doing so will only make everything much more difficult to achieve.

If we are convinced that the Holy Spirit is real, we cannot continue to live life as if He were not.

The spirit of God is real and dwells in the believer, if we accept Jesus into our lives as Lord, and clear the way so that He can manifest himself.

He will lead us through a process in which he will cleanse us day by day of our addictions, sins and all evil.

Dear friend, to take that important step in overcoming your addiction with God’s help, you need not continue to hinder the work of the Holy Spirit.

Please don’t sadden him by allowing bad things to come from the world in your life.

I invite you to start walking with God.

May with his grace help you turn away from the evil in every corner of your soul.

Help you clear the way, open the door of our heart to the spirit of God, and pray to the Lord incessantly that He may enter to dwell.

Let us plead every day so that his work is manifest more and more in us.

Only in this way can the apostle’s words become a reality in our lives:

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

That addiction with God’s help can no longer control your being, it is time to surrender entirely to the control of God’s Spirit.
