Cómo volver al primer amor con Dios según la Biblia voltando ao primeiro amor

How to return to our first love with God

Read Time:4 Minute, 10 Second

Most of us, as we begin our walk with God, are consumed by a first love so beautiful that it radiates all areas of our lives.

That love motivates us to make reforms and have a courageous faith.

However, as time passes, we enter, perhaps, into a comfort zone where the worries of life and distractions manage to deprive us of that deep experience.

But is it possible to go back to our first love?

Moreover, does God expect us to return to that way of life?

Today, I would like to share with you some thoughts on this subject.

Let’s see what the Bible says in one of its fragments about it:

You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

‭ ‭‭

| Revelation‬ ‭2: 3‬-4

As I read these verses addressed to the church of Ephesus, in context with the entire passage.

It is glimpsed that the problem that the Lord exposes in relation to that church is possibly related to a great spiritual zeal that after many struggles against false doctrines ends up taking the place of the simplicity of love.

The words the Lord spoke through Jeremiah resonate at the same time.

(…) ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.‘

| Jeremías‬ ‭2:2‬ ‬‬

There is something from that first experience in our walk with the Lord that the enemy tries to steal from us, but that the Lord hopes will be preserved.

But what is it?

It is difficult to establish exactly what the Lord was referring to in the passage of Revelation.

However, by contrasting it with the passage of Jeremiah, we can see that in the past God had filed a similar complaint against Israel.

In it, he demands them for the lost faithfulness and trust.

If we look at our lives, we can see that we often fall into that same mistake.

This may be evidenced by a lower interest in spiritual topics.

A lack of health in our prayer life.

It can also be seen in a considerable decrease in our level of risk tolerance, for example.

Before it could be much easier to make decisions and actions consistent with God’s promises without looking at our weakness but at his power.

Now we may see ourselves trapped in the contradictions of a heart that loves but at the same time fears for many other things.

Perhaps, like Peter walking on the waters, it is easy to look at ourselves and forget that our life is in the hands of Jesus.

Your life is in God’s hands of love.

It seems to be a difficult task to maintain a mature zeal, simple love, and complete trust.

Yet the Lord asks us to do so.

But how?

How can we go back to that first love with God?

Today’s study passage goes on to say:

Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. (…)

| ‭‭Revelation ‭2:5‬

It all starts with a conscious decision.

God calls for a personal decision.

First, he calls for remembering where we have fallen from.

An honest assessment of our current situation with respect to the one that was better.

Recognizing our problem and identifying it.

Seeing where we’ve changed.

Seeing where we’ve fallen from.

Then He invites us to repentance and then to action.

Surrendering to the Lord with repentance, if applicable, and asking for help in making accurate decisions that strengthen our muscle of love and faith.

God does not violate our will and in love shows us the right way with the longing for us to choose it.

The rest is the work of the Holy Spirit.

We are children of a good and patient God.

We have a Savior who sympathizes with our weaknesses and opens the doors for us to confidently approach the throne of grace, where we can find help.

Let us run into the arms of that loving God and ask him to blow in our hearts the fire of that first love.

May he give us the strength to make the necessary reforms, and let us trust that he who began the good work will finish it.
