What does it mean to delight in God?

Read Time:4 Minute, 37 Second

What does it mean to delight in God? is very common question among many believers.

In recent weeks, I have had the opportunity to meet some readers of our blog.

Interestingly, most of your questions relate to topics about God’s will, life changes, romantic relationships, among others.

Those conversations remind us that we are all children of God with similar challenges, fears, and joys.

They remind us that we are not alone in our spiritual struggle and is a common question.

Inspired by those conversations and my own experience, I have begun to think about what it means to live with Christ.

What it means to delight in God?

As I read my Bible, I found a word that caught my attention: Delight, as it appears in the following psalm:

You will show me the path of life; In your presence there is fullness of joy; Delight at your right hand forever.

Psalm 16:11

This verse expresses what the Christian experience should be, fullness, joy, delight.

This does not mean that there have no problems, losses, or sorrows; but we understand that our loving father is with us even in those difficulties.

That’s when we find something we all want; fullness.

How many times have we gone after the last cell phone, a better job, a trip, a career, or a person.

Trying to find a sense of wholeness and joy in this life? Then, what does it mean to delight in God?

Actually, the answer is in this verse.

It is God who gives us joy and shows us the way.

It is also possible to relate the word delight, with something very common, for example: think of your favorite ice cream.

Now, remember that time when you stopped consuming it for a few weeks, and then on a hot afternoon, you bought it and tasted it while it melted in your mouth.

Well, that’s how real our experience with God can be, the psalmist tells us:

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:8

There have been times in my life when I have not seen how good Jehovah is and the happiness there is with Him.

Moments when I’ve focused so much on what I should or shouldn’t do, that I’ve forgotten to really enjoy his presence.

In that way, God has become a philosophy, a concept, but not a reality, and I have come to feel empty, aimless, or purposeless.

However, when I have opened my heart and asked for his help to see his love, I have found an answer and happiness. By so doing What does it mean to delight in God?

I know that my experience is not an isolated case.

As I read the full psalm 34, I can identify myself with the psalmist.

He cried out to God and God answered him, was delivered from his fears, and even though he was in affliction, he trusted that God would save him.

Moreover, regardless of the circumstances, Jehovah’s angel was with him, because he trusted God.

Being a Christian can be a delight, and be as real as eating ice cream or enjoying a sunset, because God wants a relationship with us.

God wants us to know him better and give him all that keep up attached to this world.

He wants us to walk by faith and so our days will be a blessing.

We will be able to give our best in our job, no matter how stressful.

We will be able to be better children, parents, or peers.

Not to please others, but to enjoy the path God has shown us.

Finally, I want to share another psalm with you:

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do.

Psalm 37:3-5

Usually, humans like to do things our way, that’s why when we decide to follow God, we often ask the wrong question.

What should I do to attain eternal life?

Like the rich young man.

However, with God, this is not the case.

The first thing to seek is to delight in Jehovah.

And when we delight in Jehovah our tastes, desires, and longings will align with His, and then we can ask according to His will and he will grant it to us.

Don’t forget that it’s not about praying for God to change his mind.

It’s about praying that God will change us, and we can do His will, which is good and perfect.

If you are in that first love with God, do not let the flame go out.

Go and “ignite” others with that passion for Christ, so that they too can find fulfillment.

On the contrary, if you are a Christian who has lost his way and simply holds a title, it is time to wake up and live a delightful life.

Ask Christ Jesus, our lawyer, friend, to revive you and help you find joy and fulfillment in Him.

Tell us about yourself. Has your Christian life been a delight? Have you experienced fulfillment in Christ?
