All Christians have been called to serve in God’s work.
However, not all people are the same.
Determining how we can best serve God, that is, our calling, is an important part of our walk with God.
If you’re wondering, what is my calling to serve God?
I would like to invite you to read together a small fragment from the Bible that presents us with two ideas about this topic.
Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.
Exodus 36:2
In this event, God had given exact instructions to Moses about what the tabernacle to be built for God to dwell in the midst of the people of Israel should look like.
Here we see how God had commissioned two people to lead this work of great creative and artistic connotations.
In addition to this, God had called many others to serve in this work, yet he had not done so by specific name.
There are two elements that the Bible mentions in this section that we can analyze to understand how to identify what our calling is.
Know yourself better and consider your personality and gifts
The first element is that the people called had received wisdom from God in the task that was required to be performed.
This means that God had endowed certain people with the capacity, talent, and creativity for this specific task of building the tabernacle.
Now, God has made you a special person, you are different from those around you, God has endowed you with potential, and will endow you with even more wisdom in some specific area.
God has given you a personality, he has given you an identity that aligns with your gifts and abilities in a special way.
That’s why knowing ourselves and identifying who we are and what our skills are and how they are aligned better with our personal identity is critical.
Look at the desires in your heart
The second element that stands out in this story is that the people who had been called to participate in this task had a desire in their hearts to participate.
They had the desire in their hearts to serve.
God did not force anyone to participate in that project, everything from the offering for construction to the construction itself was voluntary.
Today God does not compel anyone either.
That’s why, to identify what your calling is, you need to find out what things you’re interested in.
In many cases our potential, talents, gifts, abilities, and/or skills could serve for various tasks, however, that does not mean that we want to take part in all of them.
Identifying what area you long to serve is the second element in knowing what your calling is.
If you don’t know yet what it is, give yourself some time to pray, to think, to try different things, to explore, to seek.
That way, you will know what things you want to do with the talents you have to serve God.
Don’t be discouraged, keep looking, God has a place for you in his work.
