What Does God Say About Discouragement?

Today, as I meditated on the Bible, something captivated my attention.

It made me jump out of my chair, and it instilled in me a passion for writing these lines.

It is a real perspective on what we can expect from God when we are discouraged.

I’ll try to address the question:  I am discouraged, is God interested in my situation?

To introduce the topic, I would like to invite you to read with me the fragment of the Bible in which I found that idea:

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

Romans 15:4 – 7

The idea I would like to highlight today is that of the “God who gives endurance and encouragement.”

This was the idea that captivated my heart.

One of the thoughts that have interested me most when studying the Bible, is that God is interested in what I feel and what happens to me.

I think that in a significant number of cases, this emphasis is not communicated enough, and comes to be replaced by a distorted idea of God’s character.

People come to understand God as someone distant who demands things from us that we find difficult to fulfill on our own.

Not as whom He really is, a loving and compassionate father who cares about the well-being of his children and cares about their situations and needs.

The Bible from beginning to end communicates these themes.

Although today’s text specifically addresses the issue of spiritual discouragement, it tells us that everything that has been written in the Bible has been written to encourage us to persevere in maintaining our hope.

The hope that by accepting God’s love in Jesus, and walking with Him, we are reconciled to God.

That we are his beloved children.

We often go through difficult periods in our lives and think about being alone in them.

We look to heaven and would like to find empathy and help, but many times our misconception of God’s character prevents us from seeing His face looking at us with love, compassion, and sympathy.

Dear reader, God is with you in your situation of discouragement.

He’s there because He wants to encourage you, support you, help you.

He’s there because that’s his way of being.

He is the God who instills encouragement and perseverance.

When you go through difficult times, even if you are going through them now, I invite you to think that God is really interested in how you feel and what happens to you.

You can come to Him without fear of being rejected.

Tell Him how you feel, what you want, be completely sincere.

Unburden your heart and wait for His loving intervention guiding you and giving you what you really need.

No matter what you’ve thought before, don’t doubt that He really wants to encourage you and help you persevere.

Look to heaven and hope for the best of God in Jesus.

I hope these words are a blessing to your life.
