What is God’s love like? | According to the Bible

Knowing God’s love is the greatest satisfaction of the human experience.

God created us to experience in all that surrounds us that love.

To live in intimate communion with Him and with others, motivated by His love.

But the question then arises, what is God’s love like?

To answer that question, I would like to invite you to read a small aside from the Bible.

For this reason I kneel before the Father(…). so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

 

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

 

Ephesians 3:14; 17 – 19

In these short verses, the apostle Paul is revealing what he asks of God in prayer regarding the church members of the city of Ephesus.

One of the things he asks for, I find the most fascinating.

He asks that they can understand God’s love.

Many people live just for living without understanding God’s love, even people who may be living an active religious life.

Although the members of the church in Ephesus were faithful believers, the apostle prays that they may understand God’s love.

Thus, the Bible reveals that understanding and knowing God’s love is a necessity for all of us.

I would like to share with you some observations taken from today’s Bible text, which allow us to understand what God’s love is like.

God’s love is the foundation of everything.

The first point I would like to make is that God’s love is what gives foundation to everything.

God’s word reveals that God Himself is love.

It also tells us that he who does not love has not known God, because God is love.

All that is good is an expression of love on God’s part.

Including you and me.

The apostle Paul prays that we believers will be grounded in love because love is the principle that vitalizes existence.

God is the source of love.

True and pure love is found only in Him.

Living a life without God is equal to living a life without true love.

God’s love is immense, infinite, unwaverable.

The second thing I would like to mention is that God’s love is immense, infinite, unwaverable.

When the apostle says he wants us to understand how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, he is speaking metaphorically to illustrate that God’s love is like an infinite ocean, where we dwell.

God’s love is like the air we breathe.

We are surrounded by it, and we cannot exhaust it.

God’s love is experienced in everything.

People, food, our work, our house, our friends, neighbors, the weather, plants, animals, breeze.

Everything that exists makes us feel loved by God.

When we experience God’s love in our lives, His love becomes a protective shield.

A refuge in the storms of life, an oasis in the middle of the hot desert of our pilgrimage.

God also demonstrated his infinite love by coming to this earth in the form of a human being, in the person of Jesus Christ.

He came to this earth to suffer what you and I suffer, to tell us that he is with us in our most difficult times.

But much more than that, God came to this earth to reconcile us to Him.

He came to pay the debt of our mistakes and sins because it was impossible for us to pay it for ourselves.

To do so, He gave his life by dying on the cross so that you and I may have eternal life.

In that way, we can enjoy forever the infinite happiness of inhabiting in his presence.

That is the infinite love of God, capable of doing the unimaginable for us.

Such love makes us feel accepted, understood, valued, makes us feel special, important, relevant.

It becomes the center at which our existence orbits.

It escapes our intellectual understanding.

The third thing I would like to mention is that God’s love is so immense that it escapes our intellectual understanding.

The apostle says that God’s love is something that surpasses our knowledge.

As we begin to experience God’s love, to be healed by Him, to feel appreciated, understood, valued, we often realize that we do not deserve it.

God is able to forgive the unforgivable, gives us countless opportunities, waits for us with incomprehensible patience, gets us out of the trouble we ourselves get into.

Faced with the experience of such perfect love, our understanding is exhausted because it is impossible for us to love like this.

But not God, that’s how He loves you and me.

God’s love is the satisfaction of the greatest human need.

The fourth and final thing I have to say is that knowing God’s love is the full satisfaction of the greatest human need.

The apostle tells us that God’s love fills us with the fullness of God.

We all would like to live a fulfilling life.

Even today, there are people who are professionally dedicated to guiding others on how to live such a life.

As our soul cries out for the eternal, we human beings try to find meaning and purpose in finite things.

We all have an eternal desire implanted in our souls.

That desire is humanly insatiable.

A real need that can only be fully satisfied in God.

God’s love is the satisfaction of the deepest human need.

It’s like having a source of fresh and sweet waters, where before there was the only thirst.

Conclusion

Experiencing God’s love is within everyone’s reach.

You can do it too.

It’s a matter of, like Paul, asking God to reveal it to us.

To allow us to understand it, accept it, and experience it in our lives.

After we’ve tried it, everything changes forever.
