How to Get a Close Relationship with God: 3 Steps

The topic of having a close relationship with God has a special meaning for me.

I myself had wanted to know How to Get a Close Relationship with God in the past.

It’s one of those things you’d like to do, but you don’t always know how to, and the more you try, the less successful you seem to have.

I would like to share with you ideas, which I believe are key to helping you be closer to God.

Scripture on a Closer relationship with God

To introduce it, I invite you to read a small text from the Bible:

(…) have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.

Exodus 25:8

The previous text presents an idea that helps us to better focus our perspective on How to Get a Close Relationship with God.

The idea of a God who wants to dwell among us.

In many cases, we have been taught the idea that God is someone so great, so supreme, and at the same time so perfect that he prefers to keep his distance from us.

The unconscious idea that God is far away, that I am the one who has to get close to him, is present in most minds.

That idea itself ends up becoming an obstacle to getting a Close Relationship with God.

Let me continue sharing with you important tips on How to Get a Close Relationship with God.

#1. Study God’s Word the right way

Page after page, the Bible presents the idea that is actually God who looks forward to being close to us.

It presents the idea of a loving God who wants to dwell in us.

A God who delights in being close.

My first advice to you in this journey is that you read God’s word regularly and meditate on it, thinking of God in a positive light. As someone who loves you, cares for you, and wants to enjoy life with you.

When you do that, you will notice how God’s word speaks to your heart daily.

#2. Talk to God daily, understanding that He wants closeness.

From Eden, when God walked through the garden to be close to Adam and Eve.

Through Israel when God accompanied them on their pilgrimage, and later asked them to build him a tabernacle to dwell with them.

We then see God instructing them to build a temple where his presence can be in the midst of the kingdom of Israel during Salmon’s time.

We then see God Himself coming in the flesh to be with human beings.

After Jesus departs, we see him living inside us by his Holy Spirit.

One day, not too far away, Jesus will return and be with us and then God Himself will dwell again among the redeemed in the new Jerusalem.

Dear reader, the idea I want to point out is that you need first to understand that God is not far away as you perhaps think.

Understand that God does not want to be far away, and that he does not prefer to keep his distance.

God delights in the proximity and of having an intimate relationship with us.

If you keep that truth in your heart and communicate to God daily being assured of this, your feeling of closeness to God will increase exponentially.

#3. Accept Jesus Merits on your behalf

Being close to God doesn’t require going anywhere, and it certainly doesn’t require earning points to deserve to be close to God.

Being close to God’s heart requires us to understand that Jesus has already done everything on the cross to reconcile us to Himself.

God wants to be close to you, that’s why Jesus came to open a way.

If you understand that truth and treasure it in your heart, you will better understand the love of the Eternal Father.

It is that immeasurable love that attracts hearts with strings of love toward Him and helps us to live in harmony with His will.

Getting a Close Relationship with God is only possible through the cross. The way to closeness to God is to know God for whom He really is in Jesus.

Conclusion

Most likely that will require you to ask God to help you understand his character correctly, because most likely God is not the way you were told He was.

God loves you, God accepts you, God longs to help you walk with Him, longs to help you leave the sin that makes you run away from Him.

Understanding and accepting God’s love for you in Jesus, accepting his grace and forgiveness, is the real path that will take you on a journey to make your heart and God’s intimately linked for all eternity.
