How to leave the past behind: 9 Bible Tips

How to leave the past behind

leave behind the past

Have you ever wondered how to leave the past behind? That moment of your life that you say, how to get out of the hole in which I feel trapped?

I have been there too.

That is why I can tell you that it is possible to leave the past behind, it is possible to leave the past behind.

I can say that God has transformed my life in such a way that today I say, as the Bible says:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; old things passed away; behold, they are all made new.

| 2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, you can leave the past behind you

In the midst of walking for Christ, I was able to understand this verse, and that is why I am sharing it with you today.

I have left my past behind and now “I am a new creature”.

That is why today I would like to tell you a little about my experience and how to leave the past behind according to the Bible.

I want to give you some advice or tips that helped me to be able to get closer to God and how I leave the past behind, that past that shames us and points us out.

You can apply them in your own way, remember that our relationship with God is personal and intimate for each person; along the way, you will begin to discover which form helps you the most.

Here are some tips to put your past behind you.

Accompany me to the word of God.

#1 Put your eyes on God and trust Him

The first thing I would like to tell you is that:

[bctt tweet=”If you really want to leave your past behind, trust that God is working on your behalf to help you. Even if you feel pain, fear, remorse, anger, uncertainty, remember that you can trust that God is working.” username=”I’m second1″]

Wait for Jehovah

Strive and take heart

Yes, wait for Jehovah.

| Psalm 27:14

I recommend that you read the entire Psalm Chapter 27.

This chapter comforts us because it talks about our Father, that he is our light and salvation and can give you encouragement in the process you go through trying to leave your past behind.

Keep the focus to your north, may it always be Christ.

#2 Don’t run from your past, face it

The second thing I would like to tell you is that in order to leave your past behind you first need to analyze what happened, process it and learn from it.

Interestingly, Psalm 27, which I told you about in the previous paragraph, was written by King David; during his flight from King Saul.

Metaphorically, sometimes we are so eager to leave the past behind that we run away from it, letting ourselves be controlled by our emotions, and that can lead us to make the wrong decisions.

What or who do you need to run away from?

Of hatred, resentment, depression, anxiety, a toxic relationship, wounds in the soul, sins?

[bctt tweet=”When we don’t face the past, that is when we leave the past behind us, we waste time in our lives because we end up carrying all the things that we try to ignore and don’t solve. What we don’t solve, becomes a poison, an enemy.” username=”I’m second1″]

This Psalm also talks about our enemies.

[bctt tweet=”Our enemy is not always a person, but those thoughts that invade our minds, that army of ideas that disturb us and damage our soul.” username=”I’m second1″]

Don’t let your past take control of your life, face it, and when you face it, don’t let yourself go back to it.

Brethren, I myself do not claim to have already reached it; but one thing I do: forgetting what is behind, and reaching out to what is ahead, I press on toward the goal, for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

| Philippians 3:13-14

#3 Feed your spirit

My third piece of advice about how to leave the past behind according to the Bible is to constantly look for uplifting content that allows you to replace your ideas with good and better things.

There are many of us who create content that nourishes the soul.

Search and find spiritual topics of your interest and replace with them the content and things that do not edify or contribute to you.

In my search process I found these and I take this opportunity to recommend them to you in your quest on how to leave the past behind:

– Finding the way

– Yes It’s Worth Waiting

– Binary Beetle

– Be The Light

-Daniel Torres

Ask God to nurture you and to use people, sermons, writings, and books that help you heal your heart, purify your soul, renew your mind.

God will always help you and guide you towards a word that speaks to your heart.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Because everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

| Matthew 7:7-8

#4 Listen to music that uplifts you

The fourth advice about how to leave the past behind according to the Bible is that you change the music you listen to music that brings you closer to God.

I mention it to you because personally this helped me to refocus, and it is in the way that I can constantly think about God and communicate with Him.

[bctt tweet=”The ideas we allow into our minds define our identity. If you want to put the past behind you and start anew, then put good ideas into your head.” username=”

The Bible says:

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honest, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good report; if there is any virtue, if anything worthy of praise, think of this.

What you learned and received and heard and saw in me, this does; and the God of peace will be with you.

| Philippians 4:8

I read on a website that “it is estimated that music is of great importance to human beings since it allows them to express fears, joys, very deep feelings of various kinds.

Music makes it possible to channel those feelings and make the person alleviate their sorrows or make their joy grow, depending on the case.”

That’s why it’s important that you start being more selective with the music you listen to.

I recommend some of my favorites to start with.

– Life expectancy- You have set me free

– One Heart- Jesus Christ is enough

-Barak ft. Redimi2 – Let’s Dance

#5 Surround yourself with good relationships

The third piece of advice on how to leave the past behind you according to the Bible is about relationships.

Influences have a lot to do with who we are.

If there is something you want to leave behind, but you surround yourself with people who invite you to it, or who are not a good example in that area, it will be difficult for you to overcome your past.

The apostle Paul recommends:

(…) I wrote to them not to be in the company of anyone who, calling himself a brother, is an immoral person, or greedy, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or a swindler. With that person, don’t even eat.

| 1 Corinthians 5:11

It is crucial to discern and learn to choose our friends, it is not that we are going to make people ugly, but we must be diligent with the type of people with whom we surround ourselves.

Even learn to say no when necessary.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers; for what fellowship has justice with injustice? And what communion has light with darkness?

| 2 Corinthians 6:14

#6 Read the Bible

The sixth piece of advice on how to leave the past behind according to the Bible is precisely to read the bible.

This is the most accurate way in which we can learn about the character of God and begin to leave the past behind by becoming like Him.

I know it can be difficult, but it’s like exercise; sometimes you will not want to read the Word of God, but when you start to do it you start to enjoy it, and that allows you to be constant.

Try to saturate your life and your mind with the word of God to stand firm against the temptations that come your way.

If you don’t have a bible at home, download this application on your cell phone.

It will send you a verse every day and you can make reading and devotional plans

For those who are of the flesh think about the things of the flesh; but those who are of the Spirit, in the things of the Spirit.

Because minding the flesh is death, but minding the Spirit is life and peace.

| Romans 8:5-6

Whenever you can, take the time to open the Bible, even if it’s just to read a verse.

What I do is that I leave the bible on my desk, (where it is visible) to force myself to do it.

You can place a wallpaper with a verse; do something that keeps you focused on your goal.

You can even write on separate sheets or memorize beautiful verses like this:

But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, Jacob, who formed you, Israel: “Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.

| Isaiah 43:1

#7 Pray, talk to God from the heart

The seventh tip on how to leave the past behind according to the Bible is to develop a daily communication mechanism with God through prayer.

Find the way that is most natural and enjoyable for you that allows you to talk to God.

For example, set your room with candles, with instrumental or worship music, keep in mind that you are going as if for an appointment with God.

Save some time to dedicate to God, kneel alone, and open your heart with sincerity and naturalness.

Let yourself be carried away by the Holy Spirit and listen carefully to the lyrics of the song that you decide to play in your time with God.

You can also keep a prayer journal, where you write down your prayers daily.

Always do it privately, the Bible says:

But you, when you pray, enter your room, and closed the door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.

| Matthew 6:6

The important thing is never stop talking to God.

Always be joyful, pray without ceasing, give thanks to God in every situation, because this is his will for you in Christ Jesus.

| 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

#8 Ask God for repentance

The seventh tip on how to leave the past behind according to the Bible is that if you really want to leave your past behind, you must repent from your heart and ask God for forgiveness.

I don’t know what your past is, you may want to put something behind you that someone did to you, that wasn’t your fault, but still everyone t

We have something to ask God for forgiveness for.

Often we don’t see our sinfulness, so we don’t know how to repent, but if we ask God to teach us and put it in our hearts we begin to see.

I know it’s not easy, and how hard it can be to start over, but I can tell you as a testimony that it can be done.

I was a person who was filled with things, that she thought would make her happy, but the reality is that it was not like that, my blindfold was removed.

#9 Receive God’s forgiveness and love

My ninth and final piece of advice on how to put the past behind you according to the Bible is to understand that God loves you and forgives you.

That God accepts you no matter what and he wants to help you.

God has open arms to you, no matter the past, no matter what you have done, or what you have not done, every day we can return to the feet of Christ.

God himself does not intend that we go to him without any sin and being perfect, on the contrary, let us approach him, just as we are, dirty with sin, with suffering and with a past.

Come to me who are weary and afflicted and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and learn from me, for I am meek and have a humble heart.

Thus they will find rest for the soul.

| Matthew 11:28-29

Remember that you are not alone, I really understand you, because I went through this; and it is still not easy for me, because I am just like you, with a sinful humanity.

However, eager to move forward, leaving the past behind, looking towards the goal, living in living hope, and choosing to be free from all ties.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be reborn to a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

| 1 Peter 1:3

Conclusion

In conclusion, I fully believe that if you follow these steps you can begin to gain spiritual maturity, and not only will you be the one reading and learning, but you will join in telling others about the works that God has done in your life.

At least that happened to me, a normal person, with the same problems that everyone can go through, with a dark past, but redeemed by the one who died for us on the cross, to give us life and life in abundance.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it abundantly.

| John 10:10
